If you want to be sure not to miss any power, features or connections when working on the go, then Lenovo's workstation is close to the ultimate you can get. That is; if you are prepared to say goodbye to your pension savings!
We know that a desktop will always be the most powerful, but there are many types of jobs that require you to be mobile, no matter the technical demands of the computer tasks you are working. Then, it is fortunate that machines like P53 exist, as only stationary machines of heavy calibre can match Lenovo's workstation computer.
Best quality built
It is obviously a massive and semi-heavy laptop with a substantial power supply, but actually not so massive that it cannot relatively easily be squeezed into the bag. It's built to withstand virtually anything; from spilt liquids to extreme sandstorms and a ride into space, but design-wise, it's a ThinkPad, just as we know and possibly love.
It's a charcoal black, no-nonsense machine, with a sleek keyboard, large touchpad with physical buttons, and then the distinctive red TrackPoint navigation thingy midway between the keys. Therefore, it does not lack control options, and everything is well constructed and comfortable to work with over a whole day.
Below the keyboard, you'll find a fingerprint reader, making it easy to log on to the machine. Logging on using face recognition is also possible via the camera above the screen. If you want privacy, this camera can be quickly closed, with a small physical slider to cover the lens.
When it comes to the selection of ports, few users will miss anything. There are several full-size USB 3 ports, USB C, both with and without Thunderbolt, HDMI, physical LAN port, card reader, smart card, headphone/microphone jack and SIM card so that you can connect it to the mobile internet. When it comes to wireless connections, you can't complain, either. You get lightning-fast Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 vPro.
The model we tested was equipped with a 15.6"4K, OLED touchscreen with Dolby Vision HDR and full-colour spectrum. It's hard to think what else could be required of a screen, and it's not possible to fault the image quality. The contrast is terrific, the colours are strong, and the sharpness so high that you can work entirely in detail with image processing and graphical work.
If you were to fall for the temptation of movies or games, it's also a delight, and here you'll enjoy the Dolby Atmos speakers, with a terrific output that enables the sound to spread far beyond the compact machine.
Whatever you choose to have a go at, the ThinkPad P53 has the power to handle it. The eight-core I9 processor runs up to 4.80 GHz if needed, and the Quadro RTX 4000 graphics card performs at a level we haven't experienced, even in the most powerful gaming laptops that have been reviewed by the editorial team.
So, there are really no limits to what you can do with the machine. It runs everything from VR to AI projects and is fully compatible with 3dsMax, AutoCAD, Vectorworks and all other major software solutions.
As far as security goes, Lenovo's strongest Thinkshield functions have been thoroughly implemented, so you don't have to worry that the wrong people will have access to your work. The battery life is also okay; the machine does well for one working day, even a long one, but it is not on the level of many of the lightweight competitors.
Then, of course, the price. It can hardly come as a surprise that a machine like this one costs the box, but claiming that it is expensive is not necessarily correct. For we are up in a league without any compromises whatsoever; where everything just works, and where the most excellent solutions have been used everywhere, so, seen in that light, it is well worth the money.
